Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Wild will try to keep their perfect start rolling tonight in Buffalo.
Minnesota has won its first two games and goes for a third straight win when it takes on the Sabres at KeyBank Center.
The Wild opened the season with a 3-1 win over the Predators in Nashville. Nick Foligno started the scoring in the first period, and newcomer Blake Coleman scored in his Wild debut to put Minnesota up 2-0. Kirill Kaprizov tipped in a Quinn Hughes shot early in the third to seal it.
Minnesota followed that up Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins in its home opener at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. After a slow start, Kaprizov and Hughes scored power-play goals in the second period. Kaprizov scored twice in the game and has three goals on the season, and Jared Spurgeon added his first goal of the year early in the third.
Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt has started both games. He stopped 19 of 20 shots in Nashville and made 26 saves against Boston. The net has been his to start the season while Filip Gustavsson recovers from hip surgery.
The penalty kill, a weak spot last season, has been a big part of the hot start. Coach John Hynes made it a training camp focus, and the unit is a perfect seven-for-seven so far.
The Wild are doing it shorthanded on the blue line; defenseman Brock Faber was injured in the team’s final preseason game.
