Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
Three people were rescued Friday night after a paddle boat capsized on Eagle Lake, southwest of Frazee.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the lake around 7:37 pm after receiving a report of a boat capsizing with three people in the water.
When law enforcement arrived, they found the paddle boat, which had a trolling motor attached, had flipped over. The victims were holding onto the boat, while one other person had already made it to shore. It is believed that the paddle boat began taking on water while returning to the access, causing it to become unstable.
A sheriff’s deputy sergeant swam out to the boat and brought a 70-year-old woman to shore. The sheriff’s office says she was wearing a flotation device but was unresponsive.
Four private citizens who were on the lake in their own boat also helped with the rescue. Two of them, along with the deputy sergeant and Frazee Fire Chief, helped the two remaining people in the water get to safety.
Dustin Strobel of Staples, and Melodie Pope of Bertha, were taken to Essentia-St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes with non-life-threatening injuries. Cindy Steuck, of Bertha, had no apparent injuries and was not transported.
Ruth Matteson of Bertha, was airlifted to a Fargo hospital. Her condition is unknown.
The Frazee Fire Department, Frazee Rescue, Essentia-St. Mary’s EMS and Life Link Air Ambulance also assisted.
