Candidates for Becker County Auditor-Treasurer, Sheriff and County Commissioner District One met with voters Thursday evening at a candidate forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Detroit Lakes Area.
The forum at M State in Detroit Lakes drew a packed room.
The Auditor-Treasurer race features Kim Frederick and Amy Rosing. They discussed the importance of the office as the financial backbone of county government, emphasizing ethics, accountability and communication. Both talked about bringing a fresh perspective to the position and learning what works and what may need to change.
Sheriff candidates Shane Richard and Luke Sweere, who each have more than 25 years of law enforcement experience, discussed staffing shortages, concerns about violent crime and drugs, and the importance of keeping the community safe.
Both candidates talked about maintaining a healthy workplace, following clear policies and procedures, and the use of technology such as drones and Flock cameras.
Erica Jepson, candidate for District One, talked about the importance of listening to residents and being responsive to the community. She also discussed challenges facing county government, including property taxes, federal mandates and reductions in federal funding. Humility and a willingness to listen were also themes during the discussion.
