Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins avoided a series sweep Wednesday afternoon, beating the New York Yankees 5-4 in 13 innings at Target Field.
Victor Caratini ended it with a game-winning RBI single in the 13th, his only at-bat of the game.
Zebby Matthews gave the Twins six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. Minnesota carried a 2-0 lead into the ninth before the Yankees scored twice to tie it. The teams traded runs in both the 10th and 11th innings before Caratini delivered the winner.
Ryan Kreidler homered for Minnesota, and Luke Keaschall had three hits and scored twice. Tommy Nance picked up the win, while John Schreiber took the loss.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Twins, who open a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels tonight in Anaheim. First pitch is set for 8:38 p.m.
