Nine candidates for three seats on the Detroit Lakes School Board took part in a candidate forum Tuesday evening, hosted by the Detroit Lakes Area League of Women Voters.
Two of the nine candidates are current school board members seeking re-election.
Questions included how candidates would handle disagreements with parents and community members, the use of artificial intelligence in schools, and the causes of low school attendance.
They were also asked whether they would be able to uphold policies established by the school board and how they would serve students from all backgrounds.
While the candidates offered different perspectives on some of the issues, they shared some common goals.
Candidates agreed that the school board’s focus should be on helping students reach their potential and providing the support they need to succeed, including making sure students feel they belong and are safe.
Candidates also talked about preparing students not only for graduation, but for life after high school, whether that means college, careers, technical training or other paths.
The three school board seats will be decided in the November election.
