Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, a day that claimed the lives of 2,977 people, including 441 first responders. It was the deadliest attack by a foreign enemy on American soil.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York says about 100 million Americans are now too young to remember the attacks, making education about 9/11 and its legacy increasingly important.

The museum says its Never Forget Fund has helped educational programs reach 5.5 million students, teachers, professionals and community members since 2021.

The attacks involved 19 al-Qaeda terrorists who hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes were flown into New York City’s World Trade Center, one struck the Pentagon in Virginia, and passengers and crew members on the fourth plane, that was flying the airplane toward Washington, DC, fought back, causing it to crash in Pennsylvania.

As the 25th anniversary approaches, here in Minnesota and across the country, we remember those who were lost and must teach younger generations about the bravery, compassion, unity and service that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks.
