Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

The Detroit Lakes School Board has voted against postponing implementation of its directive regarding non-school sponsored materials in district schools.

The board considered a resolution Monday that would have paused implementation of a July 27 motion while the district worked with its administration and legal counsel to address materials and signs involving political, social, religious and other controversial topics.

The resolution stated that the district’s role is to educate students and make them feel welcome regardless of their beliefs or viewpoints, while keeping classrooms focused on education rather than particular political, social or other viewpoints.

The July motion called for the removal of non-school materials that are not funded, sponsored or authorized by the district. Rainbow stickers, posters, flags and buttons were cited as examples of those materials.

The resolution to postpone implementation failed on a 3-3 vote, leaving the July directive in place.

The school board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for September 28.
