Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is inviting the public to explore Hubbel Pond Wildlife Management Area in Becker County during an open house Saturday, August 29, that runs from 10 am to 2 pm.

The open house is part of the DNR’s celebration of 75 years of wildlife management areas in Minnesota. Rob Baden, Detroit Lakes Area Wildlife Supervisor, says the open house will give people an opportunity to explore a historical part of the area that includes the original site and is not normally open to the public.

Activities will include a demonstration on harvesting wild rice, information about forest management and the area’s logging history, and a guided hike led by a representative from the North Country Trail Association. DNR staff will also be available to answer questions about the wildlife management area. 75th anniversary themed prizes will be offered.

Baden says the open house will be informal, with breakout sessions allowing visitors to explore the activities that interest them.

Hubbel Pond Wildlife Management Area is located about eight miles east of Detroit Lakes. Parking is available off County Highway 29 near Rochert, about 2 miles north of State Highway 34. Signs will be posted to direct visitors.
