Twins Blow Five-Run Lead, Swept By Phillies

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins had a five-run lead and a chance to salvage the finale of a three-game set on Sunday. They got neither, falling 7-5 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Target Field and getting swept in the process.

Brooks Lee put Minnesota up 4-0 in the first inning with a grand slam down the right-field line off Phillies starter Andrew Painter, one pitch after pulling a would-be slam just foul. It was Lee’s 18th home run of the season and the second grand slam of his career. Kody Clemens added a solo shot in the third to make it 5-0.

Philadelphia answered with seven unanswered runs. Alec Bohm hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run sixth off Twins starter Dean Kremer, who went five and a third innings and gave up four earned runs while striking out six.

Bohm tied the game at five with a bloop single in the eighth, and Bryan De La Cruz followed with a roller that snuck past first baseman Royce Lewis and the bag to plate two more.

Andrew Morris was charged with the loss and gave up all three eighth-inning runs on four hits. It was a rough outing for a reliever who had allowed just two earned runs across 28 and a third innings in his previous 27 appearances dating back to June 12th.

Former Twins closer Jhoan Duran finished it off against his old club for his 26th save of the season.

Minnesota has dropped four of its last five and is 4-10 in August. The Twins host the Atlanta Braves tonight at 6:40 p.m., with Bailey Ober scheduled to start opposite Braves left-hander Martín Pérez.
