Minnesota’s Walk-In Access Program has received a $2.1 million federal award to increase public access to private lands for hunting, fishing and other wildlife related recreation. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and will help the Minnesota DNR maintain the program for the next three years.
The Walk-In Access Program pays private landowners to allow public access to their property without additional contact with the landowner. This year, about 22,000 acres of private land were enrolled across more than 220 Walk-In Access sites in western, central and southern Minnesota.
The sites open September 1 and are available through May 31 of next year. In addition to hunting, they can be used for activities such as birdwatching and nature photography.
Anyone using a Walk-In Access site must purchase a three dollar Walk-In Access Validation. The validation is available online through the Minnesota DNR, their mobile licensing app, or wherever Minnesota DNR licenses are sold.
Maps and information about individual Walk-In Access sites are available through the DNR’s Walk-In Access webpage. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/walkin/index.html
