Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins opened a three-game set with a lopsided loss Tuesday night, falling 8-2 to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Kansas City jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning and never trailed. The Royals added three more in the fifth and three in the eighth to put the game away.

Joe Ryan took the loss, allowing five runs — four earned — on seven hits and two walks over five and a third innings. He struck out three. Minnesota’s bullpen gave up three more runs, and the Twins committed two errors.

Royce Lewis was the lone bright spot at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double. Josh Bell homered in the eighth for one of Minnesota’s two runs. Outside of Lewis and Bell, the Twins managed just one hit and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Bobby Witt Jr. led Kansas City with three hits and two RBI. Randy Dobnak picked up the win, giving up one earned run over five innings.

The loss is Minnesota’s third in a row and drops the club to 56-58 on the season, third in the American League Central and four games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox. Kansas City improved to 47-67.

The teams meet again tonight at 6:40 p.m. and wrap up the series Thursday at 6:40 p.m. before Minnesota heads to Milwaukee for a weekend series with the Brewers.
