Several new Minnesota laws took effect August 1st, bringing changes affecting Minnesotans in the workplace, schools and communities.
Among the biggest changes, cryptocurrency ATMs are now banned statewide as lawmakers work to crack down on scams and financial fraud.
A new Payment Transparency Act is also designed to help small businesses get paid on time by creating clearer payment requirements and improving working relationships between businesses.
The Minnesota Human Rights Act now requires employers to engage in an interactive process to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities.
Another new law increases penalties for impersonating a peace officer. In some cases, the crime now carries felony penalties of up to 10 years in prison, particularly for repeat offenders or those who are armed while posing as law enforcement.
Other new laws that took effect August 1 include raising the minimum age to purchase kratom from 18 to 21 and expanding protections for victims of AI-generated explicit deepfakes.
