Vikings Add Rookie Cornerback, Waive Rookie Running Back

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Vikings made a pair of roster moves Sunday as training camp continues in Eagan.

The team signed rookie cornerback Jarod Washington and waived rookie running back Kejon Owens, clearing room on the 90-man roster. Owens was waived with a non-football illness designation.

Washington comes to Minnesota as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State. He began his college career at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, before transferring to South Carolina State for the 2025 season. In 12 games last season, Washington recorded 33 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and 22 pass deflections.

The Vikings’ announcement noted he was a first-team FCS All-American.

Despite going unselected in April’s draft, Washington stayed on NFL radars. He spent time at rookie minicamps with the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before landing in Minnesota.

Owens had also joined the Vikings as an undrafted rookie. The Florida International product took part in Minnesota’s offseason program but was placed on the non-football illness list on July 27th.

Moves like these are common at this stage of camp, giving teams enough healthy bodies to get through daily practices and the preseason schedule. Washington will compete for reps in a defensive backfield coached by coordinator Brian Flores as the Vikings work toward roster cuts later this month.

The team continues training camp practices this week at the TCO Performance Center.
