Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s air quality alert remains in effect for west central Minnesota through 11 am Friday, with very heavy wildfire smoke expected to continue affecting the region.
Smoke from large wildfires in northern Minnesota and Canada is expected to keep air quality in the very unhealthy to hazardous range at times through Friday morning.
The MPCA says hourly air quality readings in the Twin Cities have already broken previous records, with additional record readings possible overnight. Hot temperatures may also make the health impacts of the smoke worse.
Residents are encouraged to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity, especially if they experience coughing, shortness of breath, or other breathing problems.
A cold front is expected to bring cleaner air on Friday, although the alert could be extended if smoky conditions persist. Current air quality conditions are available on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Air Quality Index webpage.
