Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

As families settle into their summer routines, Essentia Health is encouraging parents to schedule annual well-child and teen checkups before the busy school year begins.

Dr. Tanya Diegel, a family medicine physician with Essentia Health, says summer offers families more flexibility to complete annual wellness visits without students missing class. The appointments can also include required sports physicals for children planning to participate in school athletics.

Annual checkups give health care providers an opportunity to monitor growth and development, update immunizations, screen for mental health concerns, and discuss nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and other health topics.

Well-child and teen visits are recommended every year from birth through age 21. Families can schedule an appointment through their child’s provider, the Essentia MyChart patient portal, or by calling Essentia Health.
