Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
The filing period for candidates seeking a seat on the Detroit Lakes School Board opens Tuesday, July 14.
Voters will elect three school board members to four-year terms during the General Election on Tuesday, November 3. The seats currently held by Mary Rotter, Sanford Nelson, and Michelle Okeson will be on the ballot.
Candidates may file affidavits of candidacy through 5 pm on Tuesday, July 28. Filing forms are available from the School Administration Center at 702 Lake Avenue in Detroit Lakes. The filing fee is two dollars, and completed paperwork must be submitted before the deadline.
School board members are elected to represent the public and establish policies that guide the district. The six-member board serves staggered terms to provide continuity and experienced leadership.
Mark Jenson, Superintendent of Detroit Lakes Public Schools, says serving on the board involves attending regular monthly meetings and committee work. He says most members participate in one to three committee meetings each month, depending on their level of involvement.
Jenson encourages anyone who has considered serving their community to think about running for the school board, saying it’s an opportunity to help shape the future of education in Detroit Lakes.
