Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Vikings organization announced the death of former safety Joey Browner, one of the most accomplished defenders in the franchise’s history. He was 65 years old.
Browner spent the entirety of his prime years in Minneapolis, suiting up for the Vikings from 1983 through 1991. During that stretch, he established himself as one of the most complete safeties in the NFL, earning six Pro Bowl selections — a testament to the sustained excellence that defined his career.
In 138 games with Minnesota, Browner compiled statistics that reflected his dominance at every facet of the safety position: 37 interceptions, 17 forced fumbles, and nine-and-a-half sacks — a rare combination of coverage ability and pass-rush impact that few defensive backs of any era have matched.
No additional details surrounding the circumstances of his death were immediately available.
