Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota women’s basketball team has punched their ticket to the Sweet 16, and now the real challenge begins.
The fourth-seeded Golden Gophers are set to face top-seeded UCLA tonight at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CDT. It’s a matchup that has tournament upset written all over it — if Minnesota can pull it off.
The Gophers advanced to the Sweet 16 with a hard-fought 65-63 victory over Ole Miss in the Second Round last weekend, escaping with a two-point nail-biter to keep their NCAA Tournament run alive. That resilience will need to be on full display again tonight against a Bruins squad that has looked like one of the best teams in the country all season.
The two programs are not strangers. When UCLA visited Minneapolis on January 14th, the Bruins left with a commanding 76-58 win — a result that left little doubt about the talent gap on that evening. Minnesota will need a dramatically different performance to advance to the Elite Eight.
Still, tournament basketball has a way of rewriting narratives, and the Gophers have already shown they can win close games under pressure. A trip to the Sweet 16 alone is a milestone worth celebrating — but for Minnesota, the mission tonight is to make it mean even more.
