Additional Road Weight Restrictions in Becker County Start Wednesday

Seasonal road weight restrictions are now in effect in Becker County, with additional limits scheduled to begin next week as spring thaw conditions develop.

According to the Becker County Highway Department, seasonal road restrictions went into effect Friday, March 7, on county highways south of U.S. Highway 10. The restrictions will expand to county highways north of U.S. Highway 10 at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 18.

Officials say the restrictions are implemented each spring to help protect roads that become more vulnerable to damage as frost leaves the ground and moisture weakens pavement and roadbeds.

Weight restriction signs will determine the allowable loads once they are installed along affected routes. County officials said roads will be patrolled and load limits enforced as the signs are erected.

The restrictions will remain in place until Becker County removes the signs once road conditions improve. If road conditions worsen or pavement failure becomes a concern, officials say gross axle weight limits could be reduced further.

Under the posted limits, maximum weights depend on the restriction level in place. For example, single axle limits range from 18,000 pounds under a 9-ton restriction down to 8,000 pounds under a 4-ton restriction. Two axles spaced within 8 feet or less range from 34,000 pounds to 15,111 pounds depending on the restriction level. Three axles within 9 feet range from 43,000 pounds to 19,111 pounds, while four axles spaced within 14 feet or less range from 51,500 pounds to 22,889 pounds.

Officials also noted that no overweight permits will be issued for vehicles carrying divisible loads that exceed axle weight limits or 80,000 pounds.

Drivers and trucking companies are encouraged to check posted signs and plan routes accordingly during the spring load restriction period.
