Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Aaron Jones is staying put. The Minnesota Vikings running back agreed to a restructured contract on Wednesday, taking a significant pay cut to remain with the team and avoid what had appeared to be an inevitable release.
Jones, who was originally set to earn $10 million this season, will now make $5.6 million under the revised terms — a reduction of nearly $4.4 million that gives Minnesota valuable salary cap relief heading into the offseason.
The 30-year-old veteran produced 548 rushing yards and two touchdowns across 12 games with the Vikings last season.
Jones was widely expected to be cut before ultimately agreeing to the pay cut.
Meanwhile, the Vikings’ quarterback situation continues to evolve. Former Arizona Cardinals signal-caller Kyler Murray is expected to meet with Minnesota representatives today. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has been one of the most closely watched names in this year’s quarterback market. Murray provides the kind of dual-threat ability that can transform an offense, and a meeting with the Vikings signals genuine mutual interest.
With Jones returning and a potential QB upgrade on the horizon, the Vikings’ offseason is taking shape quickly.
