Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – A disastrous eight-run first inning by the Atlanta Braves proved too much to overcome, as the Minnesota Twins dropped a 9-8 Spring Training contest on Monday.
Despite a power-packed offensive performance, the Twins couldn’t dig out of the early hole, falling to 4-11 in Grapefruit League play.
Starter Zebby Matthews struggled from the outset, allowing six runs before being lifted after 3⅔ innings. By the time the dust settled on the opening frame, Atlanta had already done enough damage to control the game.
Minnesota’s bats were far from quiet, however. Royce Lewis, Josh Bell, Gabriel Gonzalez, Tanner Schobel, and Jake Rucker each went deep, giving the Twins five home runs on the afternoon — but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
The Twins now turn the page quickly with right-hander Joe Ryan set to take the mound today against the Tampa Bay Rays.
