According to the National Weather Service, preparation is key this winter.
Keep your gas tank at least half full and carry a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. Essentials may include energy bars, a flashlight with extra batteries, candles and matches, a container for melting snow, blankets or a sleeping bag, extra warm clothing, a shovel, jumper cables, and a first aid kit. If you have a cell phone, always carry it with you to call for help.
When driving in winter weather, be especially cautious on icy roads, bridges, and overpasses. If your vehicle begins to skid, ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want to go. Always remain calm.
If you become stranded during a severe winter storm, stay in your vehicle. It’s safer and makes it easier for rescuers to find you. Make your car visible if possible, and run your engine in short intervals with a window slightly open to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
Whenever possible, consider postponing your trip during a blizzard.
