Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Vikings face a significant challenge heading into their upcoming matchup, as starting quarterback JJ McCarthy has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol following Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell informed reporters Monday that McCarthy displayed concussion-like symptoms after the game. If McCarthy is unable to clear protocol in time, the Vikings will hand the keys to their offense to undrafted rookie, and former Minnesota Gopher, Max Brosmer for Sunday’s contest.
Brosmer, 24, signed with Minnesota after going undrafted in April’s NFL Draft. The University of Minnesota product has seen limited action this season, completing passes for just 42 yards in his brief appearances.
McCarthy’s status will be monitored throughout the week as he progresses through the league’s concussion protocol.
The Vikings have not announced a timeline for McCarthy’s potential return.
O’Connell and his coaching staff will spend the week preparing Brosmer for what could be his first career start in the NFL.
