Small Ice Harvest Now Likely on Little Detroit Lake

Jan 14, 2021 | 11:33 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A small ice harvest on Little Detroit Lake may happen after-all.

In early January the MN Sn’ICE Ice Harvest Committee feared recent State COVID guidelines and warm weather would make it difficult to harvest ice this year. COVID guidelines are still a factor, so the committee has decided to adjust.

The MN Sn’Ice Ice Harvest Committee will light up the “Royal Tree” and three additional trees in the Detroit Lakes City Park, Feb. 4-15, 2021. Additional small ice sculptures will also likely be added says MN Sn’ICE Ice Harvest Committee Member, Scott Walz, “mother nature did cooperate this year and we’ve got some decent ice out there – we’re going to try to harvest some ice and we might have some carvings mixed among the trees.”

The Committee is hoping to create an Ice Palace in 2022 as a finale to Detroit Lakes’ 150th Anniversary.
