WALKER, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and a Cass County deputy injured Sunday afternoon in Turtle Lake Township.
According to Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk, the incident began around 4:37 p.m. on November 16, when a 911 caller reported hearing gunfire near homes in the area of Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road NW (County Road 13), just outside Walker.
Deputies responded and began searching the area. A short time later, they attempted to speak with a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW. Sheriff Welk said the man immediately fled on foot, prompting a pursuit.
During the chase, gunfire was exchanged. A deputy was shot and later airlifted to a Fargo hospital for further treatment. No additional details about the deputy’s condition have been released.
The male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that deputies’ body-worn cameras were activated during the incident. Those involved have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard protocol.
The Minnesota BCA is now leading the investigation and will release additional information as it becomes available.
