Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota United’s run in the 2025 US Open Cup came to an end with a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Austin FC at Allianz Field. The loss eliminates the Loons from the prestigious tournament.

Despite a spirited effort in front of their home crowd, Minnesota United found themselves trailing early and were unable to mount a complete comeback. The Loons’ lone bright spot came in the 67th minute when midfielder Joaquin Pereyra found the back of the net, providing a glimmer of hope for the home side.

Pereyra’s goal energized both the team and the Allianz Field faithful, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome Austin FC’s two-goal advantage. The visiting side managed to hold on for the victory and advance to the next round of the tournament.

The Loons won’t have long to dwell on the defeat, as they return to Major League Soccer action this Saturday night. Minnesota United will host the Chicago Fire FC at Allianz Field.
