Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Target Field witnessed one of the most dramatic near-comebacks of the season Tuesday night, as the Minnesota Twins mounted a furious rally that fell just one run short in a 10-9 loss to the New York Yankees.
What started as a potential blowout turned into a nail-biting thriller that had the Target Field crowd on their feet until the final out. The Twins found themselves in a seemingly insurmountable 10-1 hole after just four innings, but refused to wave the white flag in what became an instant classic.
The night began ominously for Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews, who had one of the roughest outings of his young career. The right-hander was tagged for nine runs on 11 hits across just three innings of work.
Down by nine runs, the offense came alive in spectacular fashion, with three different players launching home runs to chip away at the Yankees’ commanding lead.
James Outman got the comeback started with a towering blast that energized both the dugout and the remaining faithful at Target Field. Ryan Fitzgerald followed suit with his own round-tripper, and Trevor Larnach capped off the power display with a crucial home run that brought the Twins to within striking distance.
As the game entered the ninth inning, the impossible suddenly seemed possible. The Twins had clawed their way back to trail by just one run, turning what looked like a laugher into a genuine thriller.
The tension in Target Field was palpable as Royce Lewis stepped to the plate representing the potential tying run. The young slugger, who has provided countless memorable moments in his still-developing career, couldn’t quite deliver the magic this time, striking out to end the game and the Twins’ remarkable comeback bid.
The loss drops the Twins to 66-85 on the season.
The series continues tonight at Target Field, with Taj Bradley taking the mound for Minnesota as they look to even the series against the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
