Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week following his remarkable NFL debut performance in the team’s 27-24 comeback victory over the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
The NFL announced on Wednesday that McCarthy has been named the NFC offensive player of the week for the opening week of the 2025 season, capping off what became one of the most memorable debut performances in recent Vikings history.
McCarthy and the Vikings rallied with 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for a 27-24 victory at Soldier Field on Monday Night Football. After struggling through the first three quarters, the former Michigan standout came alive when it mattered most, orchestrating a stunning comeback against the Bears in his hometown area.
McCarthy finished the night with 143 yards and two touchdowns and one pick on 13 of 20 passing. More importantly, he made history by becoming the first quarterback to score three fourth-quarter touchdowns in his NFL debut — throwing two touchdown passes and running for another score during the decisive final frame.
