Perham Public Schools Open 2025-26 School Year with Growing Enrollment and Excitement

Perham — Despite early morning thunderstorms, Perham Public Schools opened its doors Tuesday, to an energized start for the 2025-26 academic year, welcoming more students than anticipated.

Superintendent Mitch Anderson said the first day went smoothly.
“We are excited to welcome our students, staff and families back for the 2025 school year,” Anderson said. “Each new year brings opportunities for growth, learning and connection, and we look forward to building on our tradition of excellence while supporting every student’s success.”

The district reported an opening-day enrollment of 1,659 students—41 more than projected and 61 higher than the final count last spring. The increase marks steady growth across grade levels.

Heart of the Lakes Elementary School saw the biggest jump, with 20 more students than projected and 30 more than last year. The fourth-grade class alone grew by 20 students. Principal Mike Kunza said the excitement was evident.
“Our staff did an amazing job welcoming student back to school,” Kunza said. “We are ready for a great year.”

Prairie Wind Middle School’s enrollment dipped slightly compared to last year, with two fewer students, but still came in nine above projections. Principal Kennedy said the school was buzzing.
“It was a great first day and we were excited to welcome kids back,” Kennedy said. “The students brought a lot of energy and we are excited for the new school year.”

Perham High School experienced the largest overall increase, with 33 more students than last spring and 12 above projections. The senior class alone added 23 students compared to last year.

Altogether, the district’s enrollment growth underscores what leaders describe as a positive start to the school year, full of enthusiasm from both staff and students.
