DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A groundbreaking for the Becker County Museum is scheduled for Thursday, May 27 at 11am.
The museum has been raising funds for several years to build a new 30,000 square foot building with a cost of $6.4 million.
“This project is a decade or more old, it’s a long time coming for this community. It will bring to this region not only a history component, but hands on learning. It’s going to open so many doors,” said Becky Mitchell Executive Director of the Becker County Museum.
The groundbreaking will including comments from Detroit Lakes Mayor Matt Brenk, Senator Kent Eken, Representative Paul Marquart and former U.S. Representative Collin Peterson.
Fork on the Road and The Ice Cream Truck will be set up and ready to take lunch orders. Additionally, a Sesquicentennial Exhibit will open celebrating Detroit Lakes’ 150th anniversary.
The Museum is still in need of around $500,000 in donations to complete the project, so the groundbreaking ceremony will also serve as an official kick-off for the Museum’s $500,000 public campaign.
Construction is expected to take around 11 months.
