DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A Detroit Lakes man was scammed out of nearly $10,000.
The Detroit Lakes Police Department is investigating after a report on Tuesday, May 18 that a vulnerable, elderly man was scammed by phone for money over the course of three months.
The victim made multiple payments to the scammer over the course of those months with the promise of a “big payoff.”
He lost an estimated $10,000 to the fraud and its unlikely the money will be recovered.
Elder fraud accounts for more than $3 billion in losses annually. Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite, often have financial savings and good credit.
