Saturday morning, it’s the Detroit Lakes Bicycle Rodeo, from 9:30 to 11:30 at Kent Freeman Arena. It’s the first time since 2019 that there’s been a bike rodeo in DL. The event is free, and kids that complete the course have a chance to win one of 6 new bikes.
Patrick Hollister from Partnership 4 Health describes what the kids will learn on the course. “We want to make sure that the kids know how to signal, most of us learn this when we are kids. There’s a signal for turning left, there’s a signal for turning right, and there’s a signal for stopping. We want to make sure the kids know those signals and know when to use them. We have a test on breaking and safe braking. We also want to make sure that kids know how to get started on their bike properly. There’s actually a right way to start on a bike to reduce your chance of wobbling or falling down before you build up your momentum. So, we want them to know that and then we have some activities that are just for fun.”
One popular event is the “slow bike race” where the goal is to be the last across the finish line.
The drawing for the bikes will be at 11:30.
