Becker County Sheriff Responds to Viral Facebook Post About Dog’s Death

By Trish Johnson Feb 27, 2025 | 5:59 AM

The Becker County Sheriff’s Office has released preliminary findings in response to a viral Facebook post alleging that a dog froze to death outside a home in Frazee. The post, which included photos of the deceased dog, sparked concern and widespread online discussion.
According to a report by Valley News Live, the sheriff’s office received a complaint Tuesday regarding the incident. While they typically do not comment on active investigations, they issued a statement to address public concerns.
Authorities say preliminary findings indicate the dog did not die from exposure to the cold. Instead, investigators believe the animal succumbed to an infection while indoors and had been seen by a veterinarian for treatment. After the dog passed, the owner and another individual wrapped the animal and placed it outside, reportedly intending to bury it once the ground thawed.
Officials acknowledged that while some may find the decision to leave the dog outside troubling, it is not a criminal act under current laws. The sheriff’s office is still investigating and has requested additional documentation to confirm their findings.
The department stated that as the investigation continues, the situation could change, and they encourage the public to remain patient and avoid jumping to conclusions based on social media posts.
