The Detroit Lakes Public Schools are inviting the community to take part in a vibrant cultural celebration at the annual Powwow on Thursday, March 13 at the DLHS Lakeshirts Fieldhouse. The event is open to students, staff, and the public, celebrating Indigenous traditions with music, dance, and storytelling.
The Powwow will begin with a Grand Entry at 9:30 a.m., bringing together students, community members, and invited drum groups for a day of cultural pride and connection. One of the highlights will be the Princess & Brave Contest, open to Detroit Lakes High School students.
Attendees can expect performances from The Tribesmen and Smokey Hills Singers, with Vince Beyl as emcee and Mike Swan as spiritual advisor. The White Earth Honor Guard will also take part in the event.
A meal will be provided from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for staff, drum groups, and registered dancers.
Community members are encouraged to attend and experience the traditions and artistry of local Indigenous cultures. For more information, contact Joe Carrier at jcarrier@detlakes.k12.mn.us.
