Feds Take Over Sex Crime Case Against Ogema Man; Sentences Handed Down in Assault, Credit Card Fraud Cases

A federal grand jury has indicted an Ogema man on four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, leading to the dismissal of his nine felony charges in Becker County District Court.
Federal Indictment for Joseph Schultz
• Joseph Daniel Schultz, 41, of rural Ogema, was transferred to federal custody after the U.S. District Court picked up his first-degree sex charges.
• White Earth Police received a report on Jan. 25, 2024, that Schultz had sexually assaulted a girl under the age of 14 multiple times.
• As a result of the federal indictment, all nine felony charges against Schultz in Becker County were dismissed on Sept. 12, 2024.
Osage Man Sentenced for Pistol-Whipping at Bonfire
• Dareine John McCormick, 23, of Osage, has been sentenced to five years supervised probation for felony third-degree assault.
• The attack happened at a bonfire near County Road 123 in Becker County on Sept. 4, 2024, when McCormick pistol-whipped another man and then smashed his car windshield with the gun.
• McCormick was originally charged with second-degree assault, but that charge was dropped in a plea deal.
• Sentence:
o 21 months in prison, stayed five years
o 150 days in jail (credit for 100 days served)
o $1,000 fine + $160 in fees
o $650 restitution to the victim
o No contact with the victim, drug/alcohol restrictions, and required assessments
Fargo Man Sentenced for Credit Card Fraud in Detroit Lakes
• Scott Richard Keeney, 39, of Fargo, was sentenced for felony financial transaction card fraud after using a stolen credit card to make fraudulent purchases at Walmart and North Shore Travel Plaza in DL on Sept. 12, 2023.
• He was identified on security footage and was using a car borrowed from his landlord.
• Sentence:
o 13 months in prison, stayed five years
o 20 days home detention with electronic monitoring
o $1,000 fine + $150 in fees
o Supervised probation for five years
o Drug/alcohol restrictions and required assessments
All three cases remain under court supervision and review.
