Two major initiatives took center stage at last night’s Detroit Lakes City Council meeting.
First, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) received a $25,000 check from the City Council to support their mission of making local docks ADA-accessible. Vice Mayor Ron Zeman presented the award, praising the DAV’s efforts and encouraging the community to back their work through upcoming fundraisers—including DAV Clothing Bin Drop-Off sites and their annual Fall Banquet.
In another key development, Steve Skoog from Becker County Environmental Services introduced a new Organics Recycling Program, set to roll out across Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Frazee, and surrounding areas. Thanks to a grant award, homes, businesses, and schools will soon have designated collection sites for organic waste, complete with BPI-certified compostable liner bags, collection carts, and separate organics bins.
Skoog reported that Becker County collects 21,000 tons of solid waste annually, with food waste making up 25% of that total. The new program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and repurpose organic material into nutrient-rich compost for local soil.
