Residents near the Detroit Lakes landfill grew concerned this weekend after noticing smoke rising from the area. However, Detroit Lakes Police and the Becker County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it is part of a scheduled controlled burn.
Local authorities explained that the controlled burn, which is carefully monitored, is part of routine landfill management and poses no danger to nearby residents. The burn is expected to continue for a couple more days, weather permitting.
Authorities urge residents not to call 911 about the smoke unless there are signs of an uncontained fire outside the landfill area.
For questions or concerns, contact the Detroit Lakes Police Department or the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.
