In his annual State of the City Address, Mayor Matt Brenk celebrated Detroit Lakes’ accomplishments in 2024 while outlining plans for 2025.
The city remains fiscally strong, with significant support from municipal enterprises like the liquor store and electric utility, which helped maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in the region. The city also achieved a ‘AA’ stable bond rating, reflecting responsible financial management.
Major Projects Completed in 2024:
• City Hall Renovation: Improved accessibility, security, and operational efficiency without increasing taxes.
• New Public Works Facility: A state-of-the-art facility consolidating departments and improving efficiency.
• Pavilion/City Park Improvement Project: Passed a local sales tax referendum, providing $17.3 million in funding for upcoming design and construction.
Detroit Lakes also saw progress in housing developments, including Southwood Shores Estates and Providence Lakes, while private donations exceeding $800,000 supported numerous community projects. Infrastructure improvements included significant street repairs and water tower construction.
Looking ahead, the city plans to address library renovations, finalize Pavilion designs, and prepare for the next phase of West Lake Drive redevelopment. Mayor Brenk emphasized the importance of community engagement and volunteerism in shaping the city’s future.
“We look forward to continuing this momentum in 2025,” Brenk said, thanking residents, businesses, and city staff for their contributions to Detroit Lakes’ success.
