Walz Creates Fraud Investigation Unit to Protect Minnesota’s Most Vulnerable

Jan 6, 2025 | 3:44 AM

Governor Tim Walz has signed an executive order establishing a new state fraud investigation unit to safeguard state programs and taxpayer dollars. The unit will operate within the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) to identify and prosecute fraudulent activity in Minnesota’s assistance programs.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Walz called fraud targeting vulnerable children “unacceptable.” He explained that such crimes often exploit programs meant to feed or assist kids in need. “These are not just financial crimes against the state and taxpayers. These are crimes against children,” Walz said.

The initiative aims to maintain Minnesota’s tradition of generosity while enforcing accountability to ensure resources reach those who need them most. Walz emphasized that this effort underscores the state’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and preserving the integrity of its programs.
