As winter weather settles in, the City of Detroit Lakes reminds residents of the snow emergency regulations designed to keep streets clear and safe during heavy snowfall.
Under City Code 802.08, the Public Works Director has the authority to declare a snow emergency whenever hazardous conditions, such as snow or ice, are expected to impede traffic or create unsafe roadways. A snow emergency will automatically be declared when snowfall exceeds two inches.
During a snow emergency, parking is prohibited on all city streets from 1:00 AM to 7:00 AM to allow for efficient snow removal. Residents may resume parking once snow removal operations are complete, unless otherwise restricted by ordinance.
Vehicles parked violating these rules may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. The first violation carries a $25 fine, with additional penalties for repeat offenses.
The City encourages tenants in downtown apartments to park in designated overnight spaces during snow emergencies to avoid fines or towing. Landlords are urged to inform tenants of these rules and provide parking alternatives.
These measures ensure the safety and accessibility of Detroit Lakes roads during winter weather. Stay informed and follow snow emergency protocols to help keep our community safe this season.
