Fergus Falls Historic Home Efforts Underway to Preserve Local Treasure

Oct 25, 2024 | 6:42 AM

In Fergus Falls, efforts are underway to preserve the historic home of Prince Albert Honeycutt, Minnesota’s first Black resident in the city, Civil War-era freedom seeker, and significant community figure. Honeycutt, who arrived in Fergus Falls in 1872, built his home in 1885, establishing it as an important landmark in Otter Tail County. Known for his contributions to the community—including being the state’s first Black professional baseball player and mayoral candidate—Honeycutt’s story reflects a unique part of Minnesota’s history.

The home, currently used by Flowing Brook Ministries, faces a $10,000 assessment deadline from a city utility improvement. Local preservationists, led by the Otter Tail Historical Society, have rallied to keep this historic site intact. The group aims to secure the house’s place on the National Register of Historic Places, protecting its legacy for future generations. A GoFundMe has been established to raise funds, allowing supporters to contribute directly to the preservation of this significant historical site.
