Sheriff Barry Fitzgibbons recently presented lifesaving awards to Hunter and Alexis Knudson for their heroic actions on August 9, 2024. While boating on East Lost Lake, their vessel took on water and sank. Despite the emergency, Alexis and Hunter managed to reach shore. Hunter retrieved a throwable cushion and swam back to the location of the victim, who was underwater. He pulled the victim back to shore, where Alexis performed CPR. Thanks to their teamwork, the victim regained consciousness and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Fitzgibbons expressed his pride in their bravery, noting that their quick actions saved a life, even as they put their own safety at risk. This award is given to civilians who perform acts of lifesaving, reviewed and nominated by the local sheriff, in this case, Sheriff Fitzgibbons.
The event highlighted the bravery of the Knudsons and the support of the local rescue teams, including Underwood Fire and Rescue and the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
