On October 8, 2024, a semi-load of waste from the Otter Tail County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Fergus Falls was flagged at the Dakota Landfill in North Dakota for suspected hazardous medical waste. After further review, a single bag containing non-hazardous medical waste was identified. With assistance from various safety teams, it was determined that the public and county staff were not at risk. The county plans to work with local medical providers to improve waste documentation practices
