Detroit Lakes City Council Meeting Highlights

By Trish Johnson Oct 9, 2024 | 7:42 AM

At last night’s Detroit Lakes City Council meeting, several important community matters were discussed. Project 412 Executive Director Amy Stearns presented two gifts to the Council, thanking them for their support in bringing Thomas Dambo’s Troll Art to life in DL.

Cole Hanson of Zorbaz addressed the Council, admitting a mistake in his variance application for signage and requesting a zoning variance to complete artwork at the restaurant. The Council, after debate on whether Zorbaz signage is community art or oversteps its approvals, denied the variance, but Hanson can reapply with adjustments.

In other updates, a new 20 MPH School Zone will be implemented on Willow Street East near the Lincoln Education Center. The City also received a grant to plant additional trees around town. Work on the DL City Library parking lot will begin next week, expected to finish within 7 to 10 days.

Looking ahead, the Council will address the Water Tower Assessment at the November meeting, with project work expected in 2025. Additionally, the City will host a Surplus Equipment Auction with more details to follow.

Mayor Matt Brenk concluded the meeting with a reminder that the vote on the Pavilion is on the November ballot, urging residents to spread the word.
