Minnesota National Guard Assisting with Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

Oct 4, 2024 | 8:22 AM

The Minnesota National Guard is stepping in to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts in North Carolina. Following an executive order from Governor Tim Walz, two helicopters and 11 soldiers from the St. Cloud-based 2-211 General Support Aviation Battalion are being deployed to assist local efforts in the hurricane’s aftermath. The Minnesota troops are expected to arrive in North Carolina by Friday and will assist for at least one week, aiding in search and rescue missions, transportation, and recovery logistics.

This deployment highlights Minnesota’s ongoing commitment to national disaster response, with the State Fire Marshal’s office also collaborating with local fire departments to gather equipment and personnel in response to Hurricane Helene’s destruction. The St. Louis County mobile command post has already been dispatched to help coordinate operations on the ground. Minnesota’s resources are crucial as North Carolina struggles to recover from the hurricane’s impact on its infrastructure, homes, and businesses.

This marks another example of the Minnesota National Guard’s readiness and ability to support emergency efforts beyond state lines, demonstrating their critical role in national disaster recovery operations.
