On **September 17th**, 18-year-old **Sam Dutcher** experienced a terrifying ordeal when his 2022 Honda Pilot malfunctioned, accelerating uncontrollably through Clay County and reaching speeds of over **113 mph**. Dutcher frantically called 911, unable to stop the vehicle despite attempts to turn it off, shift to neutral, or use the brakes.
After traveling more than 30 miles, a coordinated effort by **Minnesota State Patrol** and a **Clay County Deputy** led to a daring rescue. Officers instructed Dutcher to deliberately crash into the back of a trooper’s vehicle, bringing the runaway SUV to a stop. Remarkably, neither Dutcher nor the responding officers sustained serious injuries.
The quick action of law enforcement undoubtedly prevented a potentially tragic outcome. Dutcher, now safe, is back at **Minnesota State University in Moorhead**, continuing his studies in auto mechanics.
