**Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH)** is urging residents to stay up-to-date on their vaccinations, particularly for **pertussis** (whooping cough), as the number of cases in **Cass County** continues to rise. Since January 2024, **41 cases** of pertussis have been reported, with **15 cases** emerging since August 1st. This is a significant increase compared to the typical **5-8 cases** annually. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness spread through coughing or sneezing.
With the new school year underway, **Dr. Tracie Newman**, FCPH Health Officer, emphasized the importance of vaccinations for **COVID-19**, **flu**, **RSV**, and **pertussis** to protect both individuals and the broader community. Pertussis vaccines are effective but can lose potency over time, meaning even those vaccinated in the past should consider a booster. Vaccinating during pregnancy also helps protect newborns who are too young to receive the vaccine.
