**MN DNR Tuesday Check-In**

By Trish Johnson Sep 17, 2024 | 6:56 AM

Let’s check in with the MN DNR and what they want you to know this week:

  1. **Waterfowl Season Opens**: Minnesota’s regular waterfowl season begins **Saturday, Sept. 21**. Hunters should be aware of new federal stamp regulations, where electronically issued stamps are valid for the season. Full details and season dates are available on the DNR’s website, with resources to help identify waterfowl and ensure compliance with hunting regulations.

  1. **Take a Kid Hunting Weekend**: Happening **Sept. 21-22**, this weekend encourages adults to introduce children under 16 to hunting. Adult Minnesota residents can hunt small game without a license if accompanied by a child under 16. It’s a great chance to teach kids about wildlife, safety, and hunting practices.

  1. **DNR Webinars**: Upcoming webinars in the **Outdoor Skills and Stewardship Series** include a session on **cone and seed collection** on **Sept. 18**, and a session on **moose research** on **Sept. 23**. These webinars are free and open to anyone interested in Minnesota’s wildlife conservation efforts. Topics include reforestation and the challenges facing Minnesota’s moose population.

  1. **Lifesaving Awards**: The DNR recently honored several staff members for their heroic efforts in saving lives. Among those recognized were **Grace Zeller**, a pilot who assisted in a Boundary Waters rescue, and conservation officers who responded to life-threatening incidents, including a serious crash and a water emergency on the Cannon River.

  1. **Public Comment for Carlos Avery WMA**: The DNR is seeking public input on updates to the **Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area** master plan. This area, home to 25,000 acres of fish and wildlife habitat, is undergoing a review for management strategies. Public meetings will be held in October, and comments are welcomed through **Nov. 1**.

  1. **Zebra Mussels Found in Ann Lake**: The DNR has confirmed zebra mussels in **Ann Lake** in Sherburne County. Following the discovery of zebra mussel larvae, the DNR is reminding the public to clean, drain, and dry their boats to prevent the spread of invasive species. Proper decontamination steps and legal requirements for watercraft transport are critical to protect Minnesota’s waters.
