Haiti in Crisis: Why Your Help is Needed Now

Jun 26, 2024 | 6:53 AM

Haiti is facing a dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by escalating gang violence, political instability, and severe economic challenges. The situation has reached unprecedented levels, with both local residents and foreign nationals increasingly at risk.

 Violence and Displacement:

– Over 360,000 people have been displaced due to gang violence, with entire neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince controlled by armed groups【25†source】【26†source】.

– In just January 2024, 806 people not involved in violent exchanges were killed, injured, or kidnapped. The total number of affected individuals, including gang members, reached 1,108, which is more than three times the number recorded in January 2023【26†source】.

– The UN reports that 5.5 million people, including 3 million children, are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Essential services have collapsed, and access to food, healthcare, and clean water is severely limited【24†source】【25†source】.

Recent Kidnappings Highlight the Danger:

– In March 2023, Abigail Toussaint and Jean-Dickens Toussaint, a couple from Florida, were kidnapped near Port-au-Prince while visiting family. They were taken during a bus ride and held for several days【35†source】.

– In July 2023, two US citizens were kidnapped from a religious organization’s campus near Port-au-Prince. The victims included the director’s wife, who served as the school’s nurse, and their child【34†source】.

The Role of International Aid:

– Despite the severe constraints, international organizations like the UN and IOM are providing crucial assistance. Over 1.5 million liters of water have been delivered to displaced people, and essential items such as blankets, water containers, solar lamps, and kitchen sets have been distributed to more than 18,000 individuals【24†source】【25†source】.

– However, only 8% of the required $674 million for the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan has been funded, highlighting the desperate need for more support【25†source】【26†source】.

Teach Haiti Fundraiser

Tomorrow’s fundraiser for “Teach Haiti” is a critical opportunity to support the ongoing relief efforts. While details about this organization are sparse, it’s vital to ensure their transparency and effectiveness. Supporting reliable international efforts can make a significant difference in alleviating Haiti’s suffering.  Tomorrow evening is the Teach Haiti presentation at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.  The conversation begins at 5:30 and goes to 7pm.  Miquette McMahon, the founder of Teach Haiti, will share their latests updates and special guest Jessica Charles, a recent graduate of Teach Haiti will share her story.  This is the 17th annual gathering.  Tomorrow will be our 3rd part of our 3 part series on Haiti’s past, present and future of this nation and why it is important for us to know.
