The U.S. Senate has passed the Fire Grants and Safety Act, reauthorizing crucial funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs through 2030. This legislation, now headed to the President’s desk, will help fire departments acquire essential equipment, gear, and training. Minnesota fire departments have received over $33 million in SAFER grants and $59 million in AFG grants since 2015, enhancing their capabilities and safety standards.

Senator Amy Klobuchar emphasized the importance of investing in local fire departments, while Senator Tina Smith highlighted the funding’s role in ensuring firefighter safety and effectiveness.
